The Market Reopens

Santiago de Atitlan is emerging from the shock of disaster and community activities are resuming. The process seemed to accelerate today when the major Thursday Mercado opened. The pueblo filled with people gathering to trade the market goods necessary for daily life, and trade goods such as avocados. Mountains of avocados began arriving yesterday afternoon and by this morning the vendors had filled half of the town square with fresh avocados in rope nets called “redes.”
